One out of four children in Illinois have lead poisoning. Because of this, the State of Illinois requires that all children have lead poison screenings prior to starting kindergarten.
This requirement is also in effect for all Head Start programs and certain daycare programs.
There are no symptoms or signs of lead poisoning. However, there are long term
effects. Children with elevated blood lead levels may suffer from learning disabilities,
mental retardation, behavioral problems, lowered I.Q., stunted growth and hearing
impairment.
More serious health problems may occur at higher blood lead levels.
Getting a child lead screening involves completing a one page questionnaire which is reviewed by PCHD staff. A determination
is then made whether or not the child will require a blood lead test. This test is simple procedure that takes 5-10 minutes
by collecting a small amount of blood from the thumb.
