Perry County Health Department's Environmental Department has a limited role when it comes to dealing with pests. Generally, our function is to
monitor for West Nile Virus that is transmissible by mosquitoes. We also have the authority to declare a public health nuisance under limited circumstances
through the Perry County Basic Sanitation Ordinance, which states in Section A that:
It shall be a public health nuisance:
15) To store, dump or permit the accumulation of debris, refuse, garbage, tires, trash, buckets, cans, wheelbarrows, garbage cans or other containers
in a matter that may harbor mosquitoes, flies, insects, rodents, nuisance birds or other animal pests that are offensive, injurious or dangerous to the
health of individuals or the public.
16) To create any condition, through the improper maintenance of a swimming pool or wading pool, or the abandonment of any basement or crawl space, or
by causing any action which alters the condition of a natural body of water, so that it harbors mosquitoes, flies, insects, rodents, nuisance birds
or other animal pests that are offensive, injurious or dangerous to the health of individuals or the public.
