In order to construct a well in Perry County you must apply for a Well Construction
Permit from the Department and pay the appropriate permit fee. Wells must be
constructed by an Illinois Licensed Water Well Contractor and well pumps must
be installed by an Illinois Licensed Pump Installation Contractor.
A major concern in constructing a private well is preventing contamination
from ground water and other hazardous sources from entering the well.
To ensure the safety of these water supplies, the Perry County Health
Department reviews water well installation plans, issues permits, and
inspects wells.
The Perry County Health Department recommends that all new wells and those
that have been repaired be tested to assure the water supply is safe.
Bottles for testing water are available from the Department. Samples may
be taken by the homeowner or by an inspector. The date and time of sampling
must be pre-approved with the Department to ensure arrival at the laboratory.
We also recommend routine sampling of existing wells.
